A lot of people view gray magic as the in between of white and black. Personally I see it as gray because magic has no color and is about balance. Magick paths are normally about self growth and learning your true self. You cannot do that if you don’t learn and accept even the darkest parts of yourself. “True to thyself” Only works if you are true to all of yourself.
So to me Gray Magic is the path of truth. It is not about harm ye none or do as ye well without any care. It is about knowing that whatever you do can have consequences. It is about choosing what to do wisely. It is about true balance. One day you might heal someone, the next you might curse someone. It all depends on what is needed to be done and what you are willing to do and being accountable for the consequences.
So how does one start down the path of gray? Toss out all the extremes from both sides of the fence. Forget about how knowing your dark side is a bad thing and actually get to know yourself, fully. Your dark and light side. Dark by the way, does not automatically mean evil and Light does not automatically mean good. Toss out redes, toss out the labels of “evil” and “good”. Gray magic does not have its own gods, goddesses or whatnot. One can choose to worship any they want. Just remember to stay true to yourself when picking one if you decide to.
Think of it like this…gray magic really is about balance. For an example, one can learn healing right? It’s all light and sunshine right? Yes it is..however there is a darkside to it as well. If one knows how to heal, then one knows how to harm. A gray witch would for instance use that knowledge to both heal and harm at the proper times. Not wrapped up in either being good or bad, simply that both actions create a balance and a much deeper connection with oneself leading to a better understanding and able to do more as time goes on.
By not limiting oneself to one “side” or idea and leaving room to all, one learns more so how what actions you choose can lead to imbalance and various consequences. Instead of cursing someone who pissed you off, you might simply make a fake voodoo doll and leave it on their car. No magic involved and the results are hilarious as they mentally mess themselves up over it.
Greys understand the actions they take is their choice and can take accountability for the consequences without blaming it on others or dark or light or this or that. If they chose the wrong action they will accept it, get past it and learn from it. Not limiting oneself and being able to accept the actions of oneself helps lead to a huge growth unlike those who follow one side and let the other shrivel up. Think of it like this, if you only workout one side of your body you will end up really unbalanced and have many issues in most every aspect of life, so why would it be any different with this? Quite simple, isn’t it.
So how does it help them grow and increase their views and accountability? Well they don’t see it in black and white(magic pun intended). They realize what is good to one can be bad to another. That balance is doing both and to maintain that balance it is learning when to do one or the other. They do not strive to be light, dark, good, or bad..they strive to be well adjusted, balanced and true to themselves and their path they have chosen.
That is the basis/basics of gray magic.
